Nature Across the Genres:
Breathing the Wild in Poems, Stories and Creative Nonfiction

In a speech she delivered on receiving the John Burroughs Medal for The Sea Around Us, Rachel Carson said, “If we have ever regarded our interest in natural history as an escape from the realities of our modern world, let us now reverse this attitude. For the mysteries of living things, and the birth and death of continents and seas, are among the great realities.” In this workshop we will explore ways of writing about personal experience within the context of such great realities—those of human history as well as those of natural history. The larger context might be ethnic identity, race relations, gender roles, political or religious affiliation, traditions of craft or other work, social class, or education; it might be geography, the cycle of seasons, the deep time of geology and evolution, cosmic history, or any number of other influences that shape and illuminate individual lives. Writing that frames personal stories within larger contexts is likely to be more substantial, more ambitious, and more revealing of our true condition than writing that treats only the isolated self. Handouts and writing invitations will be provided.

June 17: Depart Homer Boat Harbor by boat taxi at 4:00pm, arrive at Lodge at about 4:45pm.
June 19: Depart Lodge at 4:00pm; arrive in boat harbor at about 4:45pm.


There is a limit of 15 participants; first -come, first-served. Minimum enrollment is 8.
Complete and submit registration in advance and preferably at the time of general conference registration. This post-conference workshop is only available to conference registrants.

Special Fee (in addition to conference fee):

$400 (includes housing, food, boat taxi: gratuity not included). Co-sponsored by the Tutka Bay Lodge.

Other activities:

Unwind after workshop sessions; kayaking; tide pooling; walk on the trails or relax on the deck.
