Day One

Gather at noon at La Baleine Café with Mandy Dixon for a seaside tasting and introduction to the region’s unique palette.

At 1:00 PM, board the water taxi for a scenic 20-minute ride across the bay to the lodge watching for whales, sea otters, seals, and eagles. Lodge managers will greet you dockside and introduce you to the property with a brief orientation.

Exploration begins by boarding M/V Sea Salt for a ride to the neighboring bay to visit an oyster farm. Meet the farmer and learn about the unique conditions of cold water growing. Taste an oyster fresh out of the water!

Afternoon cooking class and introduction will begin in the Widgeon II with our chefs. The Widgeon II is our 1949 re-purposed crabbing boat that is now used as our interactive classroom for culinary excursions. Prepare one of our featured house recipes inspired by Chef Kirsten Dixon.

Break before dinner to meander on our trail system, relax on the deck or explore Tutka Bay Gardens.

Appetizers are served at 6:30 PM in the main lodge followed by a three-course dinner served table d’hôte style. After dinner, join staff for a presentation about Alaska’s culinary history.

Day Two

Early morning gentle yoga class at 7:00 a.m. on the deck with views of Tutka Bay. Breakfast is served at 8:00 a.m.
Today’s class will begin on the dock to meet our local fisherman and learn about the species of fish at home in Kachemak Bay.
Instruction will focus on filleting, deboning, and cooking regional seafood. We will discuss wine pairing, preparation and presentation in this hands-on course.

Luncheon is prepared and served together in the Widgeon II. After lunch, enjoy free time to hike, kayak, or rest on the deck with a book.

In the afternoon,  meet back at the cooking school for instruction on appetizers and dessert recipes.

Dinner is served at 7:00 PM in the main lodge. Following dinner, relax in the hot tub or enjoy the wood fired sauna.

Day Three

Early morning gentle yoga class at 7:00 a.m. on the deck with views of Tutka Bay. Breakfast is served at 8:00 a.m.

After breakfast forage to gather ingredients. This one-mile guided walk in old growth Sitka Spruce forest will explore how to identify, sustainably pick, and use wild variety in recipes. Toss a salad with wild blueberries and spruce infused oil, or sprinkle fresh sea salt from the bay as a finishing touch. We will end the walk in the Tutka Bay Garden to discuss growing in Alaska.

Luncheon is served in the main lodge. After lunch, instructors will demo recipes using locally harvested ingredients. During the course, learn regionally history, style, and traditional recipes. Dishes include wild seafood, berries, harvested beach greens, and locally grown produce.

(Optional) Meet guides to explore one of the many trails through Kachemak Bay State Park or travel by boat with your guide to the Grewingk Glacier. View the glacier’s exposed gravel field and learn the anatomy of an Alaskan glacier. Take the Glacier Lake hike and admire building size icebergs in the lake nestled up in the mountains. This glacier helps tell the story of this region’s history, both ecologically and culturally.

Join fellow travelers at 6:30 PM for appetizers and wine to share stories of the day’s adventures. Dinner is served at 7:00 PM. After dinner, join our boat captain for a sunset cruise around our neighborhood watching for whales and other sea life.

Day Four

Morning yoga on the deck before breakfast is optional. After breakfast, catch the water taxi back to Homer. Maybe explore the artist community of Homer and enjoy lunch at our La Baleine Café.
