The Cooking School at Tutka Bay

Join Us In a Unique and Rustic Seaside Setting Along Kachemak Bay

It was a desire to learn more about maritime culture – and cuisine – in Alaska that led us to the Kachemak Bay along the Kenai Peninsula in the spring of 2009. We were lucky enough to purchase Tutka Bay Lodge, after living for more than a quarter of a century together in the backcountry of Alaska, far from the ocean.

Now, we find ourselves captivated with the daily dramatic tidal change and the rich ocean life found in our small cove. To celebrate our adventure, we are pleased to announce the addition of our cooking school based at Tutka Bay Lodge.

A Cooking School Housed in a Historic Crabbing Boat

The interior of The Cooking School at Tutka Bay

Our cooking classes take place on the Widgeon II, a re-purposed crabbing boat which was originally a World War II-era troop carrier. Located on a lagoon across from Tutka Bay Lodge, the boat was moored to shore during a high tide by a previous owner, who then built a two-story wooden structure onto the deck. With some added renovations, the Widgeon II is now a rustic outpost adapted for cooking classes, large enough for 12 guests per day, and special events.

We offer weekend cooking programs open to the public as well as private guests staying with us at the lodge. Each Friday, Saturday and Sunday we celebrate local Kachemak Bay cuisine, we offer tips and insights to our company recipe collections, and we offer weekly-rotating three-course menus featuring a personalized collection of global recipes prepared from a regional perspective.

The unique setting of our cooking school offers inspiration to explore Alaska’s regional products. We feature local Alaska seafood including halibut, salmon, crab, and famous Kachemak Bay oysters. We gather the best of Alaska seasonal ingredients including homegrown vegetables, berries, mushrooms, Alaska honey, and other local fare.

Enjoy a seaside luncheon prepared by the class in a convivial setting with time enough to explore our hiking trail or meander the shoreline before returning to the Tutka Bay Lodge or the boat ride back to Homer.
